Why the colour is flat and the line is thin

Nothing on these pages is lit or shaded: colour arrives in flat areas, separated by a thin dark outline, the way a screen printed poster works. The curls are cut from a small palette of warm earths with one cold teal held back for contrast, so the page stays hot without turning muddy. Lettering is scripted rather than typeset, because a drawn line beside a drawn shape reads as one hand. The only photographic element is the tea, which sits in the middle of the ornament as the thing the poster is about. Chinese tea suits a warm flat palette because its own range runs the same way, from ochre bud to brick roast to near-black paste. The result is closer to a concert poster than a catalogue, and it is meant to be read at a distance first.
